Johnny
(Nny) - To explain, Johnny, I'm afraid, is probably an exercise in futility but I'm always up for a challenge once in awhile.
I think I shall begin with the obvious and go from there. Johnny is a less than well adjusted human being. He has the nasty habit of killing people. Usually quite brutally. It is very rare that the people he killed are not assholes. There have been a few exceptions like the perfectly nice guy he killed simply for his blood. Oh that's another thing, Johnny's house has a bit of a mind of it's own. But I'll get to that later. It also turns out that Johnny was chosen to soak up all the free floating bad vibes that roamed the earth. He was chosen for this job because he is so introverted, it wouldn't have affected him that much. Whoever made that decision didn't account for the fact that all those bad vibes can make a person go quite insane, as in the case of Johnny. Okay, so the badness wasn't the only cause of his insanity, he was already pretty insane, but being a "flusher" didn't help him any.
He lives in a shack with a many leveled basement filled with torture devices and interesting toys of impending doom. He uses them to destroy evil people who, he thinks, deserve it. Like I said, they usually make fun of him because of the way he looks and for that, they automatically suck, but they don't deserve to die, it's just another example of Johnny taking things a little too far over the line of over-reacting. He uses the blood of the people to paint a wall in one of the rooms. Behind the wall is an unnamed evil (by the way, it's not a moose). He uses the blood to keep the wall wet and the thing trapped. Eventually the thing gets out, kills a few people and ... it's a really long story. Go buy the comics, you silly thing, you.
He has a few companions: his next door neighbor, Todd (aka Squee) and Nail Bunny, a pet rabbit he had that he fed once and promptly nailed to the wall. Nail Bunny is Johnny's voice of reason it's a little strange to explain so go out and get the books yourself. There are the doughboys, Psycho Doughboy and Mr. Eff. They are Johnny's other voices but after awhile they become, self-aware, and one of them actually encourages Johnny to end his miserable life. This leads to some strange and interesting stuff.

Squee
- Squee is
the very adorable little guy that lives next door to Nny. Squee's
real name is Todd but when Nny asks his name the only sound that
emits from the little guy's mouth is a feeble "squee."
I really like Squee,
he has all this sad horrible stuff happen to him and nobody does
anything about it. His parents hate him. His daddy says that Squee
ruined his life. Squee's momma is just never in the mood to help
Squee when bad things happen to him. She always ignores him. Shmee
told Squee that his parents were bad people, but like a good little
boy, he defended them by saying that just because they wished he
would get kidnapped doesn't make them bad people. He just wants to
be loved. sniff
Shmee is the only
one who appears to care at the beginning. But would a teddy bear who
loved you try to make you hate your parents or scare you? Something
isn't right with that bear. But just look at him. He's so cute!(in a
demented sort of way.)
If anybody would
really like to give me the Squee comics I would be much appreciative
:) although, I have the comics. But if you are in a generous mood, I
could always use a few more.
My favorite Squee!s
are #1 and #4. Parts of #3 were good too but I wasn't exactly
thrilled with #2. As |Sunder| put it, "It's just a case of not
pleasing everybody all the time." Or that's close to what he
said, but I digress. #1 was a great intro the separate series and
begins with our little protagonist getting abducted by aliens. Squee!
#4 simply made me giggle the whole way through. Jhonen did an
excellent job in finishing the series and let us know what Johnny's
been up to while his neighbor was being traumatized.
Getting your Squee
fix is easy. They have been collected into one big trade chock full
of Squee goodness with the added bonus of all the Meanwhiles
and WHB's.

Devi
- Our girl, Devi, made her first appearance in Johnny the Homicidal Maniac in the now famous and extremely popular, "Shit in the Pants" Meanwhile. She later moved on to date Johnny, who promptly tried to kill her. She kicked his ass, hid in her apartment for a reeaallly long time and that was the last we heard from her. Until now.
Jhonen has put Devi in her own storyline. It's a great perspective and a wild, funny ride. Okay so it's not all that wild. But it is really funny. I definitely think I laughed more with this book than any of Jhonen's other stuff. I think what I like a lot about this book is Jhonen knows exactly where he wants these characters to go and he's building and developing them really well and getting great results. I also like that we get to see a minor character introduced in the Johnny series really expounded upon. The same reason I liked Squee. We get to see the characters in their own lights.
I can't say it enough, but this book was really funny. I haven't quite figured out the nitty gritty meaning behind it just yet. I'll get to that when I know what it is. But for now, on to the pictures!!
